No name

I’m starting to think we really need to start thinking up a name for the upcoming baby. We discarded most of the entries from our long-standing list, and now we’re left with next to nothing. (I mean we can’t keep calling him ‘sweetie’ forever!)

The Régie des rentes du Québec has a nice children’s given names databank set up. The link is actually hidden down on the right of the main page. The databank displays facts like how many people named their children by which name, the most popular names, etc. – it’s from Québec statistics of the last few years. Entering names in there and finding how many times it was given is becoming an addictive little game.

We’re hoping to give our kid a decent and bilingual – but not too popular – name. Oh, and it has to go with “Gélinas”.

Good luck! We had a hell of a time. It was only when I was joking around, suggesting names like “Chewbacca” or “Jabba” and “Obi Wan” that my wife mentioned “Ben” as nice name. After a moment, I decided that I liked it too. Plus “Benjamin” works en français. It took us about 3 months of looking and thinking, but we found one in the end and he looks like a Ben, so it was ok.

Hehe… Well, he is a cute little Ben, that’s for sure.

I had a harder time with middle names – one needs to be able to YELL them, together with the first name, with the resultant combination sounding VERY STERN. It didn’t help that whenever I would ask Mike for his input, he’d be completely unserious about it. We were considereing ‘Leah’ for our oldest and when I asked him what middle name he thought would go well with that, he responded “Tard”.

Good luck, Emilie! I hope that if there’s another DebCon, you can bring your little ‘sweetie’ along….

Oops – speaking of names, that was SmartyBelle just now (blushing). Perhaps now I should drop the first part of that nom de plume, non?
