Opinions solicited
I’m brewing thoughts on a couple of things that are different and blending together at the same time, and I’m soliciting opinions.
A couple of catalysts:
- I’m turning 30 this year (in about two weeks, in fact).
- I want to start supporting something. A charity, an organization, a cause… I want to do some right for the world (if that makes sense…). We’re blessed and I want to give back a little.
One or two months ago, I thought a small birthday-fundraiser would start me off well. The way these works, is requesting that people give donations instead of gifts/stuff. Charity:Water has a great goal and looks like it’s doing great things, so I would have gone with them. Their website is setup nicely, too.
A couple of things changed my plans:
First, cynics (that I love and trust…!) brought to my attention that not all charities are well managed. That’s likely. I browsed for reviews/ratings on Charity:Water and didn’t find anything worthwhile, so I’m now looking at various charities, trying to find well-rated charities/organizations that support good causes.
I like environment/sustainable world organizations, but I’m having trouble figuring out tangible actions they are taking (I registered on WWF.ca, but I still don’t know what they are doing, exactly, except marketing and attending summits). I also looked into sponsoring a child; it feels like something I would like to do. I’m not a religious person, so Christian sponsoring (such as World Vision and Compassion) is not a good fit for me, but I found “Plan“, which offers child sponsoring — I didn’t find many reviews of them, but what I saw was good enough. “Water for People“, which has objectives similar to Charity:Water, seems like a good one, too.
If you have opinions and sources on good charities/organizations — and validating websites (ex. charitynavigator.org) — I would love to read them. Thank you.
Now, for the other thing: I’m turning 30 in two weeks, I want to make it special (ie. drown out nostalgia and general grumpiness about piling on a new decade). I’m not really a party animal, although I like to hang out with friends; I enjoy explorations and visits/activities. Ideas?

Emilie – try Save the Children. They’re 100% Canadian, with a very small overhead. Also, for what it’s worth I have 2 kids through Plan, and they have sent me very detailed pie charts that looked fancy and told me that they were spending my money wisely.

Thanks both for the recommendations. (There’s so much to choose from!) I’ve spent my lunch hour looking at those… Save the Children look like they have a good program. I really like how Foundation Beyond Belief works — even if I choose another organization, I might make small donations to them.
I donate to a couple of places each year.
my local National Public Radio station – because I listen to podcasts from lots of places and want to help pay for them
Red Cross – I tend to alternate between the national and international versions – I think they are fairly well run and I know that they will do something good for someone I don’t know
I also participate in Kiva – not true charity (though part is) but I like the idea of helping a specific person make a better life for themselves
As to the party – I think doing something that you would not do normally (formal dinner, attend a play, jump off a building (and land safely ;P ) helps to commemorate the event with a nice memory.
Or you could schedule a visit to sunny South Florida. We have a spare room.
Hey! Justement, j’en parlais avec Christian de tes 30 ans! Il m’a dit qu’il allait chez vous hier pour des bricoles pour votre nouvelle chambre et qu’il allait t’en parler! J’ai pris congé tout le week-end du 20-21 pour être sûre!
Mes idées:
Avec tous tes amis / famille:
-Une journée plein air
-Une soirée karaoké (quoiqu’il faut que t’ailles envie de chanter…)
-Un souper dans un beau resto exotique où ça fait longtemps que t’as envie d’aller
-La location d’une salle privée au cinéma de Shawinigan pour aller voir Alice in Wonderlands de Tim Burton en 3D
-Une soirée chic et mondaine où tout le monde est habillé en robe de soirée (pourquoi pas! c’est toujours charmant!)
-Une soirée choucroute/bière ou vin/fromage
-Un tournoi de Dance Dance Revolution
-Une sale virée de magasinage avec ta p’tite soeur
-Une sortie au Village des Sports (quoique je sais pas s’ils ont encore d’la neige…)
Avec juste votre petite famille:
-Un week-end dans un chalet (les amis peuvent venir faire un tour le samedi PM, genre!)
Juste de même:
-Une soirée dans un resto asiatique montréalais avec la décoration toute rose et où on mange à genoux et où il y a des petites pièces séparées pour chacune des tables (pas loin de chez nous, ça fait au moins 4 personnes qui me le conseillent!)
-Les parents avaient parlé de te fêter en grand cet été à l’extérieur (parce que ça fait longtemps qu’on en parle et qu’on sait que les parents seront pas là dans 2 semaines) alors si tu veux faire quelque chose de plus sobre, on se rattrapera sous le soleil, ou dans un chalet charmant!
…j’ai plus d’idées rocambolesques pour l’instant, mais j’en ajouterai d’autres plus tard si celles-là ne te plaisent pas!
Il faut bien te fêter ma grande soeur cette année! 30 ans, c’est pas rien!

Karine : Wow! Tu as vraiment pensé à ça déjà, on dirait…
On a une cabane à sucre pour le dîner du 21, mais rien d’autre pour l’instant. Peut-être qu’on pourrait monter à Mtl… c’est sûr que j’aimerais te voir, en tout cas! Je ne sais pas si on serait kids-free, par exemple, mais le resto asiatique semble bien.
Pas besoin de faire une fête cet été… Je dis que je veux souligner l’occasion, mais ça ne veut pas dire que je veux faire une méga-fête. Je veux surtout éviter de rien faire, si tu comprends ce que je veux dire.
Bref, c’est ça… merci pour les (nombreuses!) idées.
(Je m’informe pour le Biermans, aussi, pour le fun… on verra.)

On pourrait sûrement emener Xavier, mais Orly je sais pas… Il y a les jeux dans la salle au fond (autos tamponeuses, jeux vidéos), par contre, qui pourraient amuser grands et petits.
Tu m’en redonneras des nouvelles! Question que je me “set” pour le week-end, si je descends à Trois-Rivières (c’était déjà dans mes plans, mais si vous optez pour le resto à Montréal, faudra me le dire pour que je réserve un peu à l’avance… c’est pas mal populaire, je pense, alors on prendra pas de chance!).
