Resolutions 2010
New decade/year. New design for the blog. New resolutions.
- Reduce (overconsumption?) by about 35%.
Partly because I’m trying to be more environmentally conscious. Partly because, although I knew the cheap stuff I bought probably meant someone was being under-paid to make it, it didn’t resonate loud enough until I heard Annie Leonard, in The Story of Stuff, say “I’m not paying for the things I buy”. I’m a proud person. I don’t want other people to pay for my things (by being exploited).
I’m not going for Voluntary Simplicity this year, but I’ll try to develop better buying habits. - Continue to give blood.
- Go to a festival. Hot-air balloons, western, whatever.
- Become better-informed about environmental issues.
- Eat less meat. (Meat pollutes. Heck, meat kills animals.)
- Start to give small chores to the kids, for them to help out around the house.
So far, I’ve asked them to put away the cereal boxes after breakfast, sort the silverware from the dishwasher, and take out the place mats for dinner. Any other ideas? - Find a physical activity that is useful (ie. motivating…).
PS. About the new design: it’s going to look super if you’re using Google Chrome (CSS3, yay!), good if you are using Firefox, and ok if you are using standards-carefree Internet Explorer. (Seriously people: IE is dragging its feet in adopting the standards, do yourself a favor and upgrade to an alternate. You will find the web looks better than you thought.)

Love the new design. Very understated palette. Nice!
Kid chores at our house:
- Putting away their own coats, gloves, hats, etc. We installed kid-height hooks by the door and a kid-height box for their winter things.
- Clearing their place at the table after they finish eating. Ben even empties his plate into the garbage.
- Tidying the play room (or living room) before bed or getting to watch TV
- Get them to help moving things from the washer to the dryer and helping to put clothes into the washing machine. If we’re lucky, Ben empties the washing machine to Sara who puts it in the dryer. But that’s very rare.
Sorting laundry is the big one that the mommy bloggers I read do; also, setting the table. I love the new pics across the top!

Aussi, je voulais te dire que je vais t’aider avec tes résolutions, j’irai aux festivals avec toi, et donner du sang aussi. Je peux même faire un effort et manger tes portions de viandes pour t’aider à réduire ta consommation

I like best how Frank is going to eat your meat for you, Emy. That right there is a selfless husband you have. Mind you, I’d do the same for Amy if she were to resolve similarly. I’m selfISH that way.

Simon, yeah: a true altruist, my Frank. Although seriously, he’s usually my biggest cheerleader for any project I take on — so it’ll be hard to begrudge his love for meat.
